FREEDOM THROUGH ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Most of all I love my personal freedom: to live where I want and operate on my own schedule each day. Entrepreneurship can provide these things if you do it right.

I treasure freedom because I have a habit for intense study – often at uncommon hours – and I’m always deeply involved in more than one pursuit. Right now I’m neck deep in entrepreneurship and competitive racquetball (which I play or train for every day). I’m still learning to manage my energy and passion levels to avoid burning out from this all-consuming approach to my interests.

I am very thankful for wedding photography because it combines my favorite artform (photography) with incredibly happy people (the clients) and the opportunity for lifestyle freedom. What’s not to like?

MY PATH SO FAR

Here’s how I got to this point.

I grew up in suburban New Jersey and earned an Ivy League degree from Dartmouth in English Literature.

Then I spent two years in Manhattan writing television news copy for 20/20, World News Tonight, and NYC local flagship stations WABC and WNBC. I was working in New York on September 11, 2001 and saw the television coverage develop in person all morning, just feet from Peter Jennings.

Next I spent five years with my face on TV reporting the news for NBC stations in Hartford CT and Raleigh NC with stories aired on The Today Show and MSNBC. I put a few clips on my wedding website at http://www.kenluallen.com/#/about-ken/.

Then I negotiated out of my television contract early to build my own businesses full-time. It has been incredibly difficult and I have never been happier. The first business effort was wedding photography, something I discovered a natural talent and affinity for. It was the easiest business for me to achieve a steady income quickly. Plus I knew I could continue shooting even when I expand to other areas.

HOME AND AWAY

I live in beautiful Northern Virginia, in the suburbs of Washington DC.

So far I’ve photographed weddings in… California, Colorado, Texas, Illinois, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington D.C., Maryland, New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Vietnam.

My goal is to get to all 50 states.

I am willing to talk with anyone who is also on this awesome path of art, business, and lifestyle design.
